About

Welcome to UIPO

UIPO (University Information Policy Officers) is an organization for copyright and information policy professionals working in academic libraries and research libraries in the United States and Canada. Members are from nearly 40 states and provinces, working in over 75 institutions and organizations.

Our Mission

UIPO is an informal, collaborative group engaged in the professional practice and discreet discussion of copyright and related legal and information policy issues in cultural heritage institutions. The group is a deep resource for learning, sharing and professional enrichment, including our emerging and evolving organizational roles.

Our History

UIPO was founded in Fall 2008 to serve as a confidential communication channel for scholarly communications officers, copyright officers and those with similar positions at universities, research libraries and similar institutions. The Association of Research Libraries hosted our mailing list from the group’s inception until July 2020, when UIPO became an independent organization. We are formalizing our organizational structure to position ourselves for increased engagement and outreach.
